The Monaco Grand Prix is a bit of a freak show. The tight bends that offer no margin for error, the sharp right-hand corners, and the adjustment that drivers have to make from dark to light upon leaving the tunnel makes it the most dangerous of Formula One circuits.

It is also the slowest and least competitive Grand Prix on the calendar. The only realistic overtaking location is the exit of the tunnel, but drivers attempting that manoeuvre risk picking up debris and compromising their grip. Traffic problems are inevitable and it is fiendishly hard for teams to get their strategy right, particularly when there is a good chance of the safety car being involved at some point.

But perhaps the reason why drivers rate the Monaco Grand Prix so highly is that it puts such a high premium on individual skill. With only the two short straights, there is nowhere on the track where a driver can switch off and collect his thoughts. Punters looking to unearth the winner should therefore concentrate on the top names and particularly those who have already shown they can win there.

McLaren have had a couple of poor races, thanks to pit stop problems in Bahrain and the demotion of Lewis Hamilton in Barcelona. Given that grid position is so important in this race, the good qualifying record of their car is a positive. Still, I don’t think it is particularly suited to the tight corners of Monaco and everything hangs on getting pole. Hamilton makes little appeal at 3/1 in the winners market, although at 9/1 former Monaco winner Jenson Button has to be considered.

Sebastian Vettel has also won in Monaco before but after dominating in Bahrain, the Red Bull team had a poor Spanish Grand Prix and there are clearly some performance issues to resolve, so I won’t be taking the 9/2 about the reigning Champion.

Ferrari President Luca Di Montezemolo wrote an open letter to team members this week encouraging them to produce their best, but there’s a limit to what they can achieve this weekend. The Ferrari lacks the traction at low speeds of some of the other cars and won’t be at its best around the twists and turns of Monaco. Fernando Alonso’s skill is formidable but even he won’t be able to drag the Ferrari into contention.

The Williams car, on the other hand, should be perfectly suited to the course, thanks to its extra downforce, and will be in its element around the sharp bends. Providing the team have recovered from the fire that marred their Spanish victory, both of their drivers are serious contenders, although the preference is obviously for Pastor Maldonado. He took the chequered flag twice at Monaco in the GP2 Series and at 14/1, Moldanado is an excellent each way bet to win his second consecutive Grand Prix.
