Sebastian Vettel is favourite to win the Japanese Grand Prix after clinching pole position for the fifth straight race in Saturday’s qualifying session.

Vettel (8/13 bet365) travelled to the orient knowing that a point will be enough to secure a second successive Formula 1 drivers championship, and the Red Bull ace moved a step closer to the title by finishing just 0.009 seconds ahead of Jenson Button to take pole position for Sunday’s race.

Vettel said: “Once I crossed the line I knew it was close. Then I got the radio call we had just done it by nine thousandths so I'm very happy

“Regarding the point I need, I'm not focusing on that. But in what is a special race, starting from pole is very special.”

The outcome will be a huge disappointment to Jenson Button (3/1), currently second in the drivers’ championship. The McLaren driver had set the standard during practice at Suzuka but when it mattered most he again came up short against Vettel and was forced to settle for second on the grid.

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso (16/1) and Red Bull’s Mark Webber (16/1) complete the second row in Japan, with McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton (7/2) and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa (50/1) on the third row.

Hamilton will be ruing a big mistake that prevented him from making a second run at pole position. The 31-year-old had held provisional pole until Vettel bettered him by 0.151 seconds, but the Englishman did not get another chance to deny the German a fifth successive pole position after backing up too much in his lead-in lap. Mark Webber and Michael Schumacher passed Hamilton on either side as he approached the final chicane and that slowed him even further meaning he did not cross the start line in time to take another shot at pole position.

Hamilton said afterwards: “I tried to give myself a gap to Jenson ahead of me, I saw Mark (Webber) coming up fast behind me going into the final chicane, so I pulled to my right.

“I didn't even see Michael (Schumacher), but he was there and he nearly crashed into me. It was quite dangerous.

“It's a shame because the car is clearly competitive and it's a shame we weren't able to get pole. But it was an interesting situation I found myself in.”
