The Spaniard, who currently tops the drivers’ standings, earned first on the grid, 0.047 seconds ahead of Red Bull's Mark Webber, with Michael Schumacher claiming third.

Reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel finished fourth, Felipe Massa fifth and Kimi Raikkonen sixth, but it was not the best of days for British hopes as Lewis Hamilton finished eighth and Jenson Button 18th.

Qualifying was halted for an hour and a half due to heavy rain, and with everything to play for tomorrow and the possibility of more difficult racing conditions, Sunday's race promises to be a thrilling spectacle.

Alonso is rated as 2/1 to win on Sunday, with Webber 4/1 and Hamilton 12/1.
