The 2011 Formula One season continues on September 11th when the teams head to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix.

The Monza circuit is one of the last old-fashioned European tracks, and will be a testing time for both driver and machine. The track is designed with speed in mind and is considered as Formula One’s ‘home of speed’. Overtaking should be a plenty at Monza as the layout of fast long straights offers excellent passing opportunities. Drivers will look to sacrifice down force to reduce drag, in the hope of producing a fast car.

Sebastian Vettel is the favourite to win the Italian Grand Prix after another magnificent performance last time out in Spa. The German claimed his seventh win of the season at the Belgian Grand Prix and extended his lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship to 92-points. Monza holds a special place in Vettel’s heart after he became the youngest F1 winner in 2008 whilst driving for Toro-Rosso.

Mark Webber’s second in Spa ensured an unlikely one-two finish for the Constructors’ Championship leaders. Webber is second in the Drivers’ championship but has been second best to his teammate for the majority of the season having yet to win a race despite starting from pole position on three occasions.

Such is Red Bull’s dominance at present, they have claimed every pole position and won seven from 12 races.

McLaren endured another mixed performance in Belgium. Jenson Button started from 13th on the grid before battling his way to a third place finish. However, team-mate Lewis Hamilton was forced to retire on lap 13 after a collision with the unpredictable Kamui Kobayashi. The result means that with seven races remaining, Hamilton and Button are 113 and 110 points respectively adrift of the run-away leader. Neither Brit has won in Italy before and the last time McLaren claimed victory - 2007 - a certain Fernando Alonso was their driver.

Alonso had a frustrating time in Spa and had to settle for a fourth-place finish after his tyres blistered badly with eight laps to go.
With this said the Spaniard won in Italy 12-months ago and is racing for Ferrari who have won here a record 19-times.

An interesting stat shows that over the past two decades, only Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher have won the Italian Grand Prix and gone on to win the Drivers’ Championship in the same year – the last being in 2003.
