Vettel test awaits Alonso at British Grand Prix

Championship leader Fernando Alonso faces a big challenge when he looks to make it two-in-a-row at the British Grand Prix on Sunday.

Few who watched the race in Valencia last time out will have failed to notice the frightening pace of reigning champion Sebastian Vettel. The German built up a 20-second lead in his Red Bull in the early stages of the race, before the safety car came out and then he was forced to retire early due to technical problems.

If Vettel can replicate that kind of form at Silverstone this weekend there will be no beating him, providing the car doesn’t let him down. Vettel is currently the 11/4 favourite to come out on top on Sunday and it may be worth backing the double world champion early before practice begins on Friday, or his price may well tumble.

Had Vettel not been struck by technical problems a win in Valencia would have almost certainly been a formality but it is worth noting that Alonso drove an exceptional race in Spain. It would be hard to describe it as the performance of his career but it certainly wasn’t far off after the Spaniard fought his way to the front after starting in 11th to claim his first-ever win at the Valencia Street Circuit.

Alonso has a decent record at Silverstone and came out on top in the British GP last season, in his only victory of the campaign. The double world champion is priced at 6/1 to secure the win on Sunday and Alonso will be keen to maintain his title bid as he seeks a third championship crown.

The last time a British driver came out on top was in 2008 when Lewis Hamilton finished at the top of the pile, on route to his only Drivers’ Championship crown to date.

The McLaren star also has a reasonable record on his home circuit and will be keen to pick up some big points this weekend in order to close the gap on championship leader Alonso, who is 23 points clear of the 27-year-old heading into this weekend’s race. McLaren have had their issues this season, not least in the pits, but Hamilton did impress in qualifying ahead of the European GP and can be backed at 7/2 to take maximum points on Sunday.

Hamilton’s team-mate Jenson Button has never managed to secure a podium finish in 12 attempts at Silverstone and the 32-year-old admits he is desperate to finally seal a win on his home circuit. McLaren’s problems have impacted on the 2009 world champion more than they have on Hamilton and Button is way off the pace in the battle for the drivers’ title.

Button desperately needs a win if he is to get back amongst the chasing pack, with the British star 63 points adrift of Alonso. Button is priced at 12/1 to secure a first-ever win at Silverstone and after his difficulties of late it would be almost typical of the McLaren driver to secure a podium finish at Silverstone on Sunday and an each-way bet on Button could well pay dividends.

The current outright odds for the drivers’ title have Alonso and Vettel as the joint 9/4 favourites, while Hamilton is 3/1 and Mark Webber, who is currently second in the standings despite failing to secure a GP win as yet, is a very tempting 16/1.
