Premier League fixtures and tips - The best bets on the opening weekend

After a summer of international football it’s finally time to turn our attentions back to the nitty-gritty of the Premier League.

Manchester City begin the defence of their Premier League crown at home to newly-promoted Southampton on Sunday. The Citizens have yet to delve into the transfer market this summer, although it may only be a matter of time before they do, but will have more than enough to see off The Saints.

If Nigel Adkins and his players weren’t already fully aware of the task at hand, then this is sure to serve as a real baptism of fire. Bet365 offer odds of just 1/6 on a home win, but you can get 11/10 on City -2 in the Asian Handicap market.

Manchester United start their campaign on the Monday when they go to Goodison Park to take on Everton. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side made a blistering start to the season 12 months ago, but traditionally find The Tofees to be tricky opposition on their home soil. Betfred make United the 10/11 favourites, but perhaps the draw at odds of 9/4 is a better value bet.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will be hoping that his summer signings can gel together from the off. Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud will al get their first taste of Premier League football when Sunderland come to visit The Emirates. The Black Cats have a decent recent record against Arsenal and can be backed at odds of 8/1 with Paddy Power to pick up all three points. They have, however, had a poor pre-season and have yet to delve into the transfer market to bolster their slender attacking options. Coral’s 2/5 about a home win looks to be the sure-fire bet of the opening day.

Elsewhere on the opening weekend Fulham are the 10/11 favourites to beat Norwich, QPR are priced at 5/4 to kick off with three points against Swansea, Liverpool are 11/10 to begin the Brendan Rodgers era with a win over West Brom and Newcastle are made the slight favourites in an intriguing match-up with Tottenham.
