It’s possible that when Carlo Ancelotti has a full squad of Chelsea players at his disposal, that Michael Essien is the first name on the team sheet. The midfielder is not only versatile, but also seems to possess the complete game which allows him to rampage box-to-box for the Blues, chipping in with several goals per season. However, it looks as though he’ll be on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.

News has emerged that Essien has suffered a knee injury, a partially torn medial ligament to be more precise. This has ruled out the Ghanaian from representing his nation in the African Nations Cup and could also see the 27-year-old miss several games for Chelsea in January and February. It’s only a few weeks until the Blues clash with Inter Milan in the Champions League and his absence would be a blow who are focused on finally winning this competition.

While Chelsea thrashed Sunderland 7-2 last Saturday, a result that was achieved without Essien, Didier Drogba and Jon Obi Mikel, this was a weak Black Cats team that lined up on Saturday and it will come as depressing news for Carlo Ancelotti, who will hope to complete his first season in English football by winning the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.
