Wigan Athletic v Norwich City betting tips – Wigan and Norwich can produce goals galore

Can Hugo help Wigan to opening day victory? (credit: Dan Farrimond)
Wigan take on Norwich in the Premier League this Saturday, with the Latics hoping to avoid another opening day humiliation at the hands of new boys

Twelve months ago, Ian Holloway’s Blackpool team went to the DW Stadium and enjoyed a dream start to life in the Premier League by winning 4-0 and leaving Wigan manager Roberto Martinez red-faced.

Martinez would have worn a wry smile when the opening fixtures for the 2011/12 season were released and his Latics team were once again paired with a newly-promoted team, with the Spaniard hoping that his side will have learnt the lessons of a year ago.

Wigan are the 7/6 favourites (Pinnacle) to claim the three points and it might turn out to be a cracking price considering that the Lancashire side have become something of a permanent fixture in the Premier League, with the Canaries having been a League One team suffering a 7-1 home reverse to Colchester 24 months ago.

Tom Cleverley and Charles N’Zogbia are no longer part of the Latics squad, although Martinez can still call on the service of Hugo Rodallega (5/1 William Hill), the forward who secured hero status at the Britannia Stadium on the last day of the season. This is also a campaign which might see Conor Sammon (13/2 Coral) emerge as a class act.

Norwich would have settled for a play-off place at the beginning of last season, although Paul Lambert’s side proved to be more consistent than Cardiff, Swansea and Nottingham Forest as the season drew to a close and they will hope to carry the momentum from that double promotion into the Premier League.

Ultimately, it is City’s form at Carrow Road which will determine whether Norwich last more than a season in the top flight and this means that the pressure will be off their shoulders for the journey from East Anglia to the north-west where Ladbrokes make them a 3/1 chance to ‘do a Blackpool’ and claim maximum points.

It is crazy to think that Grant Holt was playing for League Two Shrewsbury three seasons ago after Forest deemed the forward surplus to requirements and the Norwich hitman is 7/1 with Coral to score the first goal, although Lambert might well decide that Steve Morison (8/1 Stan James) leads the line for Norwich’s first game in the big time.

Where does that leave us in terms of finding a winning bet on the clash at the DW Stadium? Realistically, we can’t be confident of backing Wigan or Norwich to win this game, although we know both teams like to play a fast-flowing game which could see the goals rain in. Pinnacle once again come to the fore with a nice price for three goals or more.

RECOMMENDATION: OVER 2.5 GOALS @ 2.05 with Pinnacle
