West Ham United favourites to win Championship promotion

West Ham on their way back to Premier League? (credit: Wikipedia)
West Ham have had a modest start to the Championship season, although they are the 3/1 favourites to win the league

Most teams in the Npower Football League Championship have now played four matches and it is Southampton leading the way after an unblemished start to life back in the English second flight.

The Saints have won all four games, including an impressive 5-2 win at Ipswich, something which has caused their Championship outright odds to plummet and Nigel Adkins’ team are now a best price 11/2 with Coral to win the league.

West Ham remain as the outright favourites at odds of 3/1 (Blue Square) despite being held to a 2-2 draw by Leeds on Sunday, something that leaves them five points off the pace at the moment.

Sam Allardyce is getting ever closer to securing the services of Scott Parker, Carlton Cole, Robert Green and Frederic Piquionne for the coming season and the big squad he has at Upton Park could help the Hammers to glory.

Leicester City (8/1 Paddy Power) were heavily backed over the summer months after Sven-Goran Eriksson splashed the cash to bring lots of new faces in, although it isn’t working out for the Foxes at the moment who have suffered consecutive home defeats at the hands of Reading and Bristol City.

Meanwhile, the other team with a 100% record after four games is Derby County, who have beaten Birmingham, Watford, Blackpool and Doncaster so far. The most impressive aspect for the Rams is that they have only conceded one goal and Nigel Clough’s team are now 22/1 with bet365 to win the Championship.

As always, it promises to be a wide-open division and Middlesbrough have a manager who knows what is required to get promotion to the Premier League. Tony Mowbray’s team have enjoyed a strong start and are now 10/1 to win the Championship, while Brighton are also high-flying and the Seagulls are 11/1 with Ladbrokes.
