Wayne Rooney ban reduced to two games

England striker Wayne Rooney leaves after his appeal against his three-game ban on December 8, 2011 at the headquarters of the European football governing body (UEFA) in Nyon. England striker Wayne Rooney could now play a role in the group stage of Euro 2012 after UEFA reduced his ban to two games.

Rooney’s participation at next summer’s tournament had been in question after he was handed a three-match suspension for kicking Montenegro player Miodrag Dzudovic during the last qualifying match, earning himself a red card.

The Football Association subsequently launched an appeal, claiming the penalty was harsh, and Rooney and England coach Fabio Capello both travelled to Nyon, Switzerland on Thursday in the hope of getting the ban reduced so that the player could feature in the group stage.

That appeal has been successful and Rooney’s suspension now stands at two games, with the third game suspended for four years. The decision means the Manchester United forward is now clear to feature in England’s final Group D fixture against Ukraine.

Club England managing director Adrian Bevington told Sky Sports News: “I am pleased to say we've had a very fair hearing from UEFA's panel today.

“The commission considered everything. They listened to evidence from Wayne and Fabio Capello and we are pleased with the outcome.

“Clearly it was very important that Wayne and Fabio attended and the outcome of Wayne being available for the third group game is a positive result for us.”

Bevington added: “Wayne always made it clear he accepted it was a red card offence and we are very pleased with the outcome.”
