Manchester United striker just 1/10 to scoop best player gong

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, who has been largely responsible for the Red Devils’ title challenge this season, is the overwhelming 1/10 favourite with SkyBet to win this year’s PFA Player of the Year award, following today’s nominations.

The other three contenders for the gong are Chelsea striker Didier Drogba (16/1), Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas (16/1) and Rooney’s former strike partner, Carlos Tevez (10/1), now of Manchester City.

Rooney is also a front-runner for the Football Writers’ Player of the Year Award, the FIFA World Player of the Year award and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2010 title. SkyBet make it 16/1 that the England international makes a clean sweep of all four.

Sky Bet's football betting spokeswoman Helen Jacob told Bettingpro:

"Rooney could potentially make a clean sweep of awards this season, which would cost us a fortune.

"He has been backed into 1/10 from 5/2 to be named PFA Players' Player of the Year, is favourite for BBC Sports Personality of the Year and a successful World Cup campaign could also see him challenge Messi for FIFA's top honour."
