Wales v Azerbaijan and Macedonia v Scotland betting tips

After the madness of transfer deadline day earlier this week, we switch our attention to World Cup qualifying at the weekend, with all teams looking to make the best possible start to their campaign. It’s especially important for the Welsh to land all three points on Saturday, especially as Germany and Russia feature in their group and are sure to present a formidable obstacle home and away.

John Toshack’s men are 2/5 (Ladbrokes) to get off to a winning start against Azerbaijan, although a string of injuries might mean that any victory is a slender one for the home team. Their opponents are 9/1 (bet365) to produce an upset of sorts, although they did manage just one win out of their twelve qualifying matches for Euro 2008. Nevertheless, narrow defeats to Finland and Belgium towards the end of the campaign suggests that they won’t roll over, and the draw is a 7/2 (Sporting Bet) chance.

After scoring for West Ham last Saturday, Craig Bellamy (10/3 Boylesports) could be the man to break the deadlock for Wales, while Forest’s Robert Earnshaw is rediscovering his form and is a 4/1 chance (Blue Square). Jason Koumas always seems to excel on an international stage and the Wigan man is 7/1 (Paddy Power) to be the first name on the scoresheet.

Meanwhile, George Burley has been dealt a tricky opener in Macedonia, with bookmakers going as big as 13/10 (bet365) about Scotland. Indeed, it should be remembered that England failed to beat the same opponents at home two years ago, while they only managed to win 1-0 in Skopje. The home team look a big price to land the three points (11/5 bet direct), although I will be backing the draw at 21/10 (William Hill), while I suspect it will be a low-scoring clash too (8/13 Stan James for Under 2.5 Goals).

If you fancy Wales and Scotland to get off to a flyer, Ladbrokes offer bigger than 2/1 about the double, although much depends on whether you think the likes of McFadden (13/2 Blue Square), Boyd (7/1 Ladbrokes) or Miller (7/1 Paddy Power) can break the deadlock.
