Ex-star claims club need to back Gianfranco Zola next month

Former West Ham United legend Trevor Brooking has become the latest ex-player to voice his fears that the club could be relegated this season, unless manager Gianfranco Zola is given funds to strengthen his squad in next month’s January transfer window.

The Hammers have struggled this season, as financial restraints have left Zola having to sell key players such as James Collins, in order to balance the books, whilst new players have almost exclusively arrived either on free transfers, or nominal fees.

With Carlton Cole the latest star player to be linked with a move away from the club, Brooking has admitted he is worried that the club could face demotion to the Championship, unless the mooted takeover by David Gold and David Sullivan, former owners of Birmingham City, can go through quickly, and ease some of the off-field pressures.

Brooking said:

"It would be good to see Gianfranco be able to bring in one or two players in January.

"It's not a massive pot but I'm sure they are not alone. With all the ownership issues in the last 18 months it has been really tough and I feel a little bit sorry for Gianfranco.

"But that is part of football. They got the team playing last year and that was positive. They had to allow one or two to go so the depth of the squad is not quite there and they are a bit short from attacking options now Carlton Cole is injured.

"It's a really competitive league because it's a must-stay-up philosophy for the 20 clubs involved. It would be wrong say you are not concerned."

West Ham are currently in the relegation zone, and should they lose this week against fellow strugglers Bolton Wanderers, their price for relegation would shorten considerably from the 7/2 (SkyBet) currently available.
