Everton outplayed Manchester United to claim an opening victory in the Premier League but can they sustain this form all season?

Wow, what an impressive display from Everton on Monday night who created the better chances and deservedly beat the Red Devils in the process.

Here are five talking points from the pulsating encounter.

1) Can Everton keep Marouane Fellaini?

There are ten days left before the transfer window shuts and any Premier League manager will surely want Fellaini in their squad based on his dominant performance against United which effectively won the Toffees the match.

The Belgian was a thorn in the Red Devils’ side last season during the 4-4 draw at Old Trafford and perhaps Arsenal, Liverpool or Tottenham will want to add the player to their ranks.

2) Shinji Kagawa promises to be a Red Devils sensation

This was a mediocre Manchester United performance which saw insipid displays from Rooney and Nani, although Kagawa looked very impressive as an attacking midfielder and came close to pinching an equaliser towards the end of the game. The Japanese international looks to be a great purchase from Borussia Dortmund.

3) Can Everton challenge for the Champions League places?

Let’s not jump the gun after one match although Everton were strong in every department against United and could make Goodison Park a real fortress this season. Perhaps fourth place could be up for grabs and the fact that David Moyes’ team have such a strong defence could see them go close.

4) What is Sir Alex Ferguson’s best United team?

Perhaps even the Scot doesn’t know right now. It perhaps caught him by surprise that the club managed to acquire RVP and, while Berbatov could be sold on, it still leaves Chicharito and Welbeck looking to get game time along with Wayne Rooney, the latter of whom looked out of sorts against Everton. Three into two doesn’t go when it comes to Valencia, Young and Nani.

5) Let’s not write Manchester United off after one game

Kagawa looks a talent, we know Van Persie will score goals and the United defence was missing Smalling, Jones, Ferdinand, Smalling, Rafael and Evans. Central midfield still looks to be a problem area although Carrick and Jones will provide extra options here and we should note that Tom Cleverley is open to big improvement this season.
