Stoke City v Sunderland tips - Black Cats can fight for victory

Martin O'Neill has had a dramatic impact at Sunderland and his side could be able to win what could be an eventful match against Stoke City on Saturday.

Sunderland would be third in the Premier League if the season had started when Martin O'Neill took charge at the Stadium of Light and there is no higher praise for the Northern Irishman than that fact. The former Leicester City, Celtic and Aston Villa manager couldn't have dreamed of a better start to life at the club he supported as a boy and players who had previously looked rubbish are starting to perform like world beaters.

Chief among them is Stephane Sessegnon. The journeyman striker looked like a waste of money when toiling up front under Steve Bruce's instructions but he has been transformed into a creative goalscorer by O'Neill. Sessegnon has scored four goals and assisted three in his last seven matches and few would bet against him being on the mark against Stoke City this weekend. It is 8/1 at SportingBet that he opens the scoring at the Britannia or 14/5 that the former PSG forward finds the net at any time on Saturday.

Sunderland are 13/5 at Bet Victor to beat the Potters and that price is certainly worth a second look. Stoke may be a traditionally strong home side but they haven't been brilliant this season with Newcastle United, West Brom and QPR claiming wins in the Britannia and both Wigan and Aston Villa claiming draws recently.

These are hardly top sides but the common denominator is that they are organised. Stoke are a side that pride themselves on being big and strong and they are very good at upsetting the best teams in the Premier League but they are often unable to assert themselves on matches. Tony Pulis is a good manager but it seems like he can sometimes be out-thought and it was noticeable that West Brom were able to exploit the Potters' lack of movement in defence recently.

O'Neill will look to emulate Roy Hodgson and James McLean (18/1, bet365), who has been a revelation since Christmas, will be deployed on the left to attack makeshift right back Jonathan Woodgate. The Irishman is certainly capable of causing the former Real Madrid defender problems and that could be the key to the game.

Stoke are 5/4 at Sky Bet to beat Sunderland but it is difficult to see exactly how they will beat the Black Cats. Peter Crouch (6/1, Paddy Power) will be marshalled by new signing Sotirios Krygiakos and Jon Walters (7/1, Sky Bet) has just gone off the boil in recent weeks. Pulis would probably settle for a draw (12/5, Coral) on Saturday but the value is on the visitors claiming victory.

Recommendation

Win Market - Sunderland (13/5, Bet Victor)
