Stoke City spent big on transfer deadline day but they face a Liverpool team that are beginning to look like they could be Premier League title contenders.

Peter Crouch was the headline buy for Stoke City on transfer deadline day with the England international striker moving to the Birtannia for a club record £10.5 million. The Potters now possess the tallest strike force in the country, with the 6ft 7in Crouch expected to line up alongside 6ft 2in Kenywne Jones on his debut, against one of the 30-year-old's former clubs, Liverpool.

The Reds were active themselves on deadline day, bringing in Sebastian Coates and Craig Bellamy and shipping out Joe Cole and David N'Gog and Raul Meireles. The latter will be missed but the impressive early season form of Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson should soften the blow.

That trio were very impressive against Bolton Wanderers last weekend but the outstanding performer at Anfield was Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan is one of the most exciting players to watch in the Premier League and his pace and movement could be particularly problematic for Stoke's lumbering defenders, such as Ryan Shawcross, Robert Huth and Matthew Upson, who can struggle against pacy frontmen.

That is mitigated by the fact that Stoke have conceded just one goal in three Premier League matches this season and managed clean sheets against both Chelsea and West Brom. One could argue that the Blues and Baggies were off form but Tony Pulis's well organised side looked relatively comfortable in both matches and Asmir Begovic is proving to be a very safe pair of hands in goals.

It is 13/5, at Victor Chandler that Stoke keep another clean sheet against Liverpool on Saturday and the same price that they beat the Reds. Both of those odds will appeal to Potters' fans but they may well struggle to do either.

If Liverpool can show the same pace and movement that they did against Bolton, and in the first half of their match against Sunderland, then they can win the match, at odds of 11/10 with bet365, but the Britannia is a tough place to assert yourself and it could well be worth backing a draw, at 12/5 with Stan James, which is a result that would probably leave both managers satisfied. Three out of the last six meetings between the two sides have ended in draws, which makes the price look like very good value.

Recommendation

Win Market - Draw (12/5, Stan James)
