A Jon Walters penalty gave Stoke City three points when they hosted Liverpool in the Premier League last month and the Potters will be looking to make it a quick double over the Reds at the Britannia on Wednesday night.

The home side come into the Carling Cup fourth round clash on the back of a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in which they more than held their own with the Gunners, only to fall to two late goals from substitute Robin Van Persie. Manager Tony Pulis was pleased with his team's attitude at the Emirates but claimed tiredness, due to their involvement in the Europa League, was a key factor in the defeat.

"We've had a lot of games already this season and we've shown a fantastic attitude in all of those games," he said.

"I thought our lads were very good for an hour and we tired after that. The free-kick we scored from was something we have been working on and we executed it very well."

There will be no opportunity for Stoke's players to rest, however, and that could be a problem against Liverpool on Wednesday. Luis Suarez, who is 11/2 at Sky Bet to open the scoring at the Britannia, and Craig Bellamy (7/1, Ladbrokes) are players that will stretch the Potters' defence and that will leave gaps for the likes of Steven Gerrard (15/2, Sky Bet) and Charlie Adam (12/1, bet365) to exploit.

Stoke, by contrast, have very few players that play with pace and guile and there is a danger that their tired players will be very static on Wednesday evening. Peter Crouch (7/1, bet365) and Cameron Jerome (9/1, bet365) are hardly the fittest players in the world and their trademark hustle and bustle style is nowhere near as effective when they are not at full fitness.

It is 5/2 at Sky Bet that Stoke beat Liverpool in the fourth round of the Carling Cup but this looks like a perfect opportunity for the Reds to score a confidence boosting win. Kenny Dalglish has shown that he takes this competition seriously, by playing full strength teams in the early rounds, while Pulis probably won't be too worried about being knocked out and, thus, having less matches to play later this season. It is 13/10 at Betfred that Liverpool win on Wednesday and that looks like a reasonable bet.
