Real Madrid spent big last summer to try to wrestle control from the Catalans, but not even the addition of Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso to a squad full of international stars could prevent Barcelona from securing another La Liga trophy. This summer, however, they have made arguably their most important signing in years, bringing in Jose Mourinho as head coach. If there is one man in the world that can produce results in the highest pressure job in football, it is the Portuguese double Champions League winner, who has claimed league titles in Portugal, England and Italy. With Valencia weakened significantly by the defection of David Villa to Barcelona and David Silva to Manchester City and Atletico Madrid perennial disappointments, it is unlikely that any other side will challenge for the La Liga title, although Sevilla, if they can hang onto Luis Fabiano and Jesus Navas could make things interesting. Villarreal, Espanyol, Athletic Bilbao and last season’s surprise package Real Mallorca will also be able to provide entertainment in what promises to be a thrilling year of football in Spain.
