Southampton v Everton tips – even money Toffees should beat sulky Saints

At least Mauricio Pochettino isn’t expecting a warm welcome on what will be a freezing cold Monday night at St Mary’s. The Argentine was surprisingly installed in place of Nigel Adkins on Friday and now takes charge of Southampton for the first time, although the 40-year-old appreciates it might take a while to win over the fans.

Supporter protests have been planned for the Sky-televised clash against Everton and it’s hard to see how the players won’t be affected by this swift change in personnel, especially as the Saints went and landed a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge as recently as Wednesday.

Everton are the sort of team who can take advantage of the home team feeling under the weather and they can be backed at 21/20 (William Hill) to claim a fifth away win of the season, with the Toffees having enjoyed a nine-day rest since a goalless draw against Swansea City.

David Moyes’ side have a very real chance of finishing in the Premier League top four this season, with the team having lost just three times all season and we can be fairly confident they will avoid defeat against a team now managed by someone who admits that his English isn’t particularly good at the moment.

It might well be Marouane Fellaini’s last season at Goodison Park considering he’s close to a double figure tally and has clearly been the standout performer for the Toffees, with the Belgian available at 7/1 (BetVictor) to claim the first goal of the game and some of his best performances have been on the road this season.

Perhaps we shouldn’t ignore the fact that Southampton are enjoying a pretty good run at the moment, having won at Villa Park last week before that excellent comeback at Stamford Bridge and they are as big as 3/1 (bet365) to give Pochettino a winning start, although just three of their eleven matches at St Mary’s have resulted in victory.

We’ll stick with Everton to double our money on Monday night and return back to Merseyside with three points. It just seems like horrible timing on the part of Saints chairman Nicola Cortese to make a chance at this stage of the season.
