AC Milan are the favourites to win Serie A after recently regaining top spot from Juventus

AC Milan have taken a four-point lead at the summit as they attempt to retain their crown as kings of Italian football. The Rossoneri didn't begin the season like champions but Massimiliano Allegri's side eventually got their 2011/12 campaign on track despite injuries to players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Kevin Prince Boateng, Alexandre Pato and Robinho along the way. They now hold the upper-hand in the battle for the Scudetto and it would be hard to look past a side that has proven championship-winning credentials.

Juventus have been somewhat of a surprise package this season and despite spending considerable time at the summit, there are many who feel they will not last the course. They boast an unbeaten record after 28 games to prove they are the real deal in this race for the Scudetto, but their huge amount of draws could ultimately deny them the title. Juventus have won 14 games and drawn 14 so far this this season, and unless they can start turning more of those draws into wins they may have to settle for second place.

The one unknown at this point in the season is Inter Milan. Things seemed to be going in the right direction at the San Siro over the summer, with Wesley Sneijder committing his future to the club and Diego Forlan arriving. The loss of Samuel Eto'o wasn't considered a major blow as the likes of Diego Milito and Gianpaolo Pazzini could offer cover.

Unfortunately, the job proved to be too much for Gian Piero Gasperini. Gasperini left the post after just five games in charge, in which the former Genoa coach claimed just one point, lost in the Super Cup final to AC Milan and was beaten 1-0 in the Champions League by Turkish side Trabzonspor. Claudio Ranieri was named as his replacement and guided the club to fifth place, but their season has since come off the rails with a series of defeats leaving them eighth in the standings.
