Scottish Premier League tips

Celtic can win this season's SPL title (credit: Ryu Voelkel)
Celtic will end three years of Rangers dominance in the Scottish Premier League this season.

Rangers have won the last three Scottish Premier League titles and they have left their Old Firm rivals, Celtic, lagging behind in recent years. That is largely down to the presence in the dugout of Walter Smith, whose impressive managerial skills have transformed an average side into one which can not only dominate domestically but also challenge in Europe.

Unfortunately for Gers fans, Smith retired at the end of last season and was replaced with former assistant Ally McCoist. McCoist’s appointment was met with scepticism by many but he silenced his doubters early on by guiding the team on a superb run of form that saw them surge 15 points clear at the top. However, that run came to a shuddering halt with a string of poor results, and a miserable end to 2011 was compounded by them losing top spot in the SPL to Celtic. Then, just when things could not get any worse for the cash-strapped Light Blues, they were place into administration by owner Craig Whyte and were hit with 10-point deduction, effectively handing the title to their rivals.

Meanwhile there are happier days on the other side of Glasgow as Celtic clearly look to be the best team in Scottish football. After an early-season struggle that led to speculation about the future of manager Neil Lennon, the Hoops ended 2011 atop the division thanks to a red-hot run of form that included a huge Old Firm win over Rangers. And the bookmakers have no doubt in their mind that Celtic - despite the loss of Beram Kayal to injury - will not fall short in the bid to deny Rangers a fourth SPL crown, making them huge favourites to rule Scottish football once more. Some bookmakers have even paid out early on this happening.

There are countless betting opportunities on the Scottish Premier League every weekend, with some bookmakers like bet365 creating around 100 pre-match markets on each SPL game. There is also the chance to bet In-Play on the action which seems to get more popular every year. This is also a great place to watch SPL games online, with bet365 committed to showing matches from the Scottish top division, including the Old Firm clashes between Celtic and Rangers.
