Scottish Cup Final Tips – Tight battle between Edinburgh rivals

Edinburgh rivals Hibernian and Hearts clash at Hampden Park on Saturday (credit: Matthew Lewis/Getty Images)
Hibernian and Hearts will continue their long-standing rivalry when they meet in the Scottish Cup Final on Saturday.

Boylesports Match Odds: Hibernian 13/5, Draw 12/5, Hearts 6/5

Down the years the Edinburgh derby may not quite have captured the neutral’s imagination or the headlines as much as the Glasgow derby, but it is one of the oldest and fiercest rivalries in football, dating back to 1875 and on Saturday the latest skirmish in the Hibernian versus Hearts battle takes place at Hampden Park, with the Scottish Cup as well as local pride at stake.

Surprisingly they haven’t met in a Scottish Cup Final since 1896. Hearts have at least won the trophy in the recent past, in 2006, the year when they also managed to split Rangers and Celtic to finish second in the SPL, and victory on Saturday would go some way towards their continuing ambition to become the third force in Scottish football. But for Hibs, this is an opportunity to end a 110 year wait.

There’s no question that Hibs are the underdogs going into the game. They have been engaged in a relegation battle for most of the season and in November drafted in Irish manager Pat Fenlon to try to stop the rot. With the help of several loan signings, he has managed to stave off the drop but they were only mathematically certain of Premier League survival after they beat Dunfermline on Monday.

Less surprisingly, Hearts also changed their manager after the season had started. Portugese Paulo Sergio has taken them from ninth to fifth and secured the last European spot beating their Edinburgh rivals three times along the way. That on its own probably won’t be enough to convince owner Vladimir Romanov to keep him on, but a Scottish Cup final triumph over Hibs might.

Sergio deserves a lot of credit for the way that he has got Hearts playing this season and for keeping the show on the road despite the problems of players not being paid on time and the continual pressure of working for a man like Romanov. The signing of Craig Beattie in February proved a master-stroke, although punters should note that he may not be fit for Saturday and without him, Hearts are not as dangerous.

Hibs have their own injury problems and will be missing regular goalkeeper Graham Stack, although young defender Matt Doherty is expected to be fit. Fenlon has taken his players to Dublin for a four day training camp this week and will be using the underdog tag to motivate his players. Having escaped relegation, morale will be high and they may well feel they have nothing to lose.

Hearts will be under pressure as the favourites and will try to make the running football wise, but Hibs will be tough, organised and energetic and will make life extremely hard for their opponents. Fear of losing and the settling of personal scores could make this an edgy, scrappy and ill-disciplined affair. I can’t see there being too many chances and I’ll be backing the draw at 23/10 in the Match Betting market.
