There are many punters out there who make a regular profit from betting on the lower rungs of the Scottish League. Inside information often plays a key role, especially as you sometimes only have an attendance of a few hundred people at the games and very little in the way of media coverage.
 
St Johnstone and Dundee are pre-season favourites to win League 1 mainly because they have played in the SPL over the last few seasons. However, this is a perfect example of bookies knowing where many people will be placing their money, and potentially underestimating the likes of Queen of the South, Dunfermline and Partick Thistle. In truth, there is very little between any of the above clubs.
 
Division 2 is generally a wide-open contest and the odds for 2007/8 indicate this will be no different with East Fife, Raith and Ayr all vying for favouritism. The same applies to Division 3 where Dumbarton, Stenhousemuir and Montrose head the market. Keep your eyes peeled for ‘ricks’, ie where one bookmaker’s price on a team sticks out a mile.
