Scotland v Lithuania betting tips - Scots can sneak victory at Hampden

Scotland were left disappointed at Hampden on Saturday
Scotland need to beat Lithuania on Tuesday if they are to keep alive their slim hopes of qualifying for Euro 2012.

Scotland's heart-breaking draw with the Czech Republic was as depressing as it was predictable and while the late penalty decision may have been harsh, the result was no more than the visitors deserved, after dominating at Hampden. Michal Bilek's side out-passed and out-played their hosts on Saturday and it was only due to the tireless running of Kenny Miller, and some last ditch defending, the Scotland even had a chance of picking up all three points.

The fact that they didn't means that Craig Levein's side are currently dangerously close to elimination from Euro 2012 qualifying. They are now five points behind the Czechs and are reliant on their rivals dropping points to both Spain and Lithuania. That is not wholly implausible but Scotland must also take at least six points from their matches against Liechtenstein, Spain and Lithuania. Their quest begins when they face the latter on Tuesday evening in Glasgow.

Scotland should beat Lithuania but odds of 3/5 (SportingBet) that they do are hardly worth considering. The hosts may hold a 100% record against the former Soviet state at Hampden but the basic errors made on Friday mean that they can't be confidently backed to beat any side at the moment. Under Levein's management the Scots have won just one competitive match and that was an uninspiring 2-1 win over minnows Liechtenstein, which was only secured via a 97th minute goal from Stephen McManus.

Lithuania held the Scots to a 0-0 draw in Vilnius and beat the Czech Republic 1-0 in Prague, so they are no pushovers. Their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign has been undermined by a draw and a loss to Liechtenstein, with Friday's 0-0 draw a particularly disappointing result.

Raimondas Zutautas's side's big problem is that they can't score goals. They have netted just three times in six Euro 2012 qualifiers and they are unlikely to be troubling the Scotland defence much on Tuesday. That is, perhaps, a good thing as the hosts look very vulnerable, and somewhat chaotic, when defending.

That would leave Scotland needing just one goal to win at Hampden and they should be able to get it, most likely from a set-piece. It is 11/2, at Unibet, that Levein's side win 1-0 and that could be a price worth taking, in a game which could be fairly dull for neutrals.

Recommendation

Correct Score - Scotland 1 Lithuania 0 (11/2, Unibet)
