Under-rated Bari can take at least a point from Roma on Sunday

Bari have been one of the surprises of the Serie A season so far, with the newly promoted side confounding critics by proving exceptionally resilient, and difficult to beat, so much so that the southern side have only lost two of their opening twelve league matches, away to Cagliari and Parma.

They currently sit three points, and four places, above Sunday’s opponents Roma, so it is perhaps something of a surprise to see the club from the capital at a best-priced 8/11 (Coral) to win at the Stadio Olimpico.

Bari are a big 5/1 (StanJames) although supporters of the Galletti may be better backing either the draw (13/5, StanJames), or, covering both options, WilliamHill’s 5/4 on the Bari/Draw double chance market, which looks to be over-priced.

Bari have, in fact, recorded six draws so far this season, which is more than any other side in Serie A. Their matches have tended to be low-scoring affairs, with nil-nil (14/1, SportingBet) their favoured score-line. Somewhat bizarrely, under 2.5 goals is an even-money (Bet365) shot, as ten of Bari’s twelve matches have contained two goals or less.

The bookies obviously feel that Roma’s goals record, both scored and conceded, should take precedent over their opponent’s. The Giallorossi have the league’s worst defensive record, and fourth best scoring rate. However, talismanic striker Francesco Totti is still expected to be unavailable through injury on Sunday, and thus much of Roma’s potency is negated.

Montenegran forward Mirko Vucinic (9/2, SkyBet) and Frenchman Jeremy Menez (11/2, Bet365) are likely to lead the line against Bari, and although both are talented players, neither one offers anything like the threat of Totti, who with six league goals, has scored double that of the aforementioned duo combined.

Totti has been absent for Roma’s last five matches, and in that period the side have only picked up four points, and scored five goals. In the same period Bari have gained ten points, and have kept clean sheets on three occasions. Form is with the southerners, and they could be capable of pulling off yet another shock in the capital.
