Republic of Ireland v Estonia result – Draw puts Ireland in Euro 2012

The Republic of Ireland secured their place in Euro 2012 as a 1-1 draw with Estonia wrapped up a convincing 5-1 aggregate win.

Ireland suffered play-off heartache in France two years ago, but they made sure there would be no repeat of that disappointment this time around.

The hosts held a commanding 4-0 lead from the first leg in Tallinn and could have put the game to bed inside the opening 10 minutes, but Robbie Keane was denied by a fine stop from Pavel Londak before firing another chance wide with only the Estonian goalkeeper to beat.

The opening goal finally came on the half-an-hour mark when Kevin Doyle’s header was parried by Londak, but unfortunately for the Estonian the ball fell to Stephen Ward and he made no mistake with his finish.

Shay Given was finally forced into a save just before the break, denying Vladimir Voskoboinikov, while at the other end Londak did well to deny a shot from Ireland midfielder Glenn Whelan.

Estonia did salvage some pride from the game when Given could not keep out a Konstantin Vassiljev strike from 30 yards, but they would have fallen behind again had Londak not kept out a powerful header from Richard Dunne.

Whelan and Given then combined to deny Martin Vunk as Ireland settled for a 1-1 draw and place in next summer’s European Championship.

Giovanni Trapattoni’s men are 10/3 with SkyBet to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2012, but the firm also acknowledge they may find it tough just getting out of their group, making Ireland 2/5 to go out in the group stage in Poland and Ukraine.

Sky Bet’s Alexander Di Michele told Bettingpro.com: “The odds are stacked against them to get out of their group whoever they draw as they will probably be in the bottom pool of seeds.

“But they are a tough side to break down under Trapattoni and will be no pushover.”
