Wigan midfielder James McCarthy has been omitted from the Republic of Ireland squad for Euro 2012 after asking to be left out for personal reasons.
McCarthy’s father has been diagnosed with cancer and so the player, who was born in Scotland but switched his allegiance to the Republic, withdrew his availability.
In a statement issued by the Football Association of Ireland, McCarthy said: “I have made the very difficult decision to withdraw my name for selection for the Euro 2012 squad following the diagnosis of my father with cancer and an ongoing requirement for treatment.
“I have discussed this with the manager. He was very understanding and I thank him sincerely for that.
“I take this opportunity to re-affirm my complete commitment to playing for the Republic of Ireland. It’s a huge honour and source of great pride for me and my family.
“Despite not being present, I would like to wish the manager and my team-mates every success at the tournament and hope Irish fans can understand the reason for my decision at this difficult time.”
Coach Giovanni Trapattoni has named his 23-man squad plus five standby players and included Sunderland winger James McClean even though he has only won one cap so far.
The Republic are 100/1 with
BetVictor to win the European Championship in Poland and the Ukraine and 29/10 to open with three points from their match against Croatia.
