The Republic of Ireland got their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign off to a winning start in Yerevan thanks to a goal from substitute Keith Fahey, that secured a 1-0 victory over Armenia.

Ireland looked laboured in the heat in Yerevan and they failed to make much of an impression on the opposition for long periods in the game.

Robbie Keane should, however, have scored after an hour, when he was through on goal, but the Tottenham Hotspur striker could only scuff his shot against the post.

With the game heading for a goal-less draw, Ireland manager Trapattoni brought on Fahey for the ineffective Aiden McGeady and the Birmingham City midfielder pounced after 76-minutes to sweep the ball home, after it broke to him in the Armenia penalty area.

The overall performance won’t win many plaudits, but Trapattoni will be pleased at having negotiated a difficult qualifying tie.
