Rangers FC newco refused SPL entry

Rangers will not be in Scotland's top flight next season (credit: Leigh Copson)
As expected, Rangers will not be playing in the Scottish Premier League next season after SPL chairmen “voted overwhelmingly” to reject the application.

A number of clubs had previously stated their opposition to the newco being granted top-flight status for the forthcoming season, making Wednesday’s vote a foregone conclusion.

There is yet to be a decision on who will take Rangers’ place in the SPL next season, with Dunfermline and Dundee both making claims for a berth, but the big question is about where the Ibrox giants will be playing.

Reports have suggested they could drop to the First Division, but with a vote scheduled for July 12 a number of Scottish Football League clubs have voiced their displeasure over the prospect of Rangers taking a place in the second tier.

However, SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster claims it would be disastrous for Scottish football if Rangers were forced to start from the Third Division next season.

Speaking to BBC Sport prior to the SPL vote, Doncaster said demoting the fallen Glasgow giants to the fourth tier would “inflict massive damage on the whole of the game in Scotland; and effectively punish 41 innocent clubs for the misdeeds of one.”

Meanwhile, Rangers chief executive Charles Green has been blasted for threatening legal action over the players that refused to have their contract taken over by his consortium.

Green insists the likes of Steven Whittaker and Steven Naismith, who have both found new clubs, should not be considered free agents.

However, PFA Scotland chairman Tony Higgins said: “Whilst it is accepted that newco is entitled to argue breach of contract, the players' union is dismayed that attempts are being made to prevent our members from playing professional football simply because they have exercised their legal right not to transfer to newco.

“I haven't spoken to a single employment or sports solicitor who agrees with Mr Green's interpretation of the law.

“Our members are being advised by our employment specialists, Brian Napier QC and Wil Van Megen, head of legal department at FIFPro.

“We are supremely confident that, under TUPE and European Law on basic principles of freedom of movement, our members are entitled to sign for new clubs.”
