Premier League results - Chelsea FC make flying start to 2012-13 season

Chelsea FC began their 2012-13 Premier League title challenge with a comfortable 2-0 win away to Wigan Athletic.

The European champions made a flying start to the game as they scored both their goals in the opening seven minutes.

Branislav Ivanovic gave Chelsea the lead in only the second minute, the right-back charging upfield and after collecting a pass from Premier League debutant Eden Hazard, evading the Latics defence and making no mistake with his shot.

Hazard, signed from Lille this summer after a transfer battle with Manchester City and Manchester United, also played a significant part in the second goal.

The Belgium international was fouled in the penalty area by Wigan’s new Spanish signing Ivan Ramis, who was also making his Premier League debut, and Frank Lampard converted from the spot even though goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi dived the right way.

It was a dreadful start for Wigan but at least they held firm thereafter and refused to capitulate under the pressure of the early Blues onslaught.

Nevertheless, Roberto Martinez’s side, who enjoyed a superb end to last season when they battled their way out of relegation trouble with wins over Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle, have had their odds cut for the drop this term.

BetVictor now go just 6/4 that Wigan will be relegated, although Martinez is still a 20/1 chance to be the next Premier League manager to leave his job.

Chelsea’s odds for the title have been cut to 9/2 by Paddy Power and Ladbrokes, although BetVictor still offer 11/2.
