Premier League results – Koscielny rescues point for Arsenal FC

Arsenal ended Manchester City’s 100 per cent home record with a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium – but the visitors could have perhaps left with all three points.

Arsenal completely dominated City, but they were almost made to pay when sloppy defending at a corner allowed no fewer than six City attackers the chance of a free header. It was no surprise that Joleon Lescott accepted to give Roberto Mancini's side an entirely undeserved lead. City were only trading at 2.2 at Betfair at the time, despite the Gunners being in command, but the 40th minute goal meant that by half time they were in to 1.35 and the visitors a whopping 14.5.

An Arsenal goal was always on the cards, though, and if anything the surprise was that it took so long to come about. When it did, it was again via a corner. Joe Hart saved well from Santi Cazorla but could do nothing when the resulting kick fell to an unmarked Laurent Koscielny barely six yards out. Anyone who had backed the draw, which was trading at 6.8 at the time, made a wise choice indeed.

In the day's opening game, Liverpool began as firm favourites but Jonjo Shelby's sending off for a reckless tackle on Jonny Evans just before half time changed the game. When they took the lead moments after half time through a Stephen Gerrard strike it looked like their supporters were in for a 5.0 pay day, but that lead lasted just five minutes before an even better strike from Rafael, chipping in with his left foot from a tight angle, levelled the scores.

As the match headed in to the final quarter of an hour the draw looked a justifiable 1.7 favourite, but then Glenn Johnson inexplicably fouled Antonio Valencia in the six yard box and, after a delay whilst Daniel Aggar was taken from the field injured, Robin Van Persie slotted in the penalty to leave Brendan Rogers' side still winless and anyone who had backed United at their longest price of the day, 3.9, just moments before Johnson's indiscretion very happy.

There was almost an upset at White Hart Lane. Tottenham conceded an early goal to QPR, were under the cosh for most of the opening half and were booed from the pitch at half time. Two goals in three minutes at the hour mark, first when Alejandro Faurlin put through his own net and then a tap in for Jermain Defoe after Gareth Bale's shot hit the bar, gave them a lead which they never surrendered. At half time they were a 4.2 shot for that win and QPR never came close to depriving anyone who had backed them at that price.

The sole 3pm start saw Newcastle host Norwich. They took an early lead, had the luxury of missing a penalty and never traded higher than 1.79 during the entire afternoon.
