Wednesday's Premier League fixtures and tips

Chelsea will hope Juan Mata can turn on the style again in their Premier League match against Newcastle (credit: (Getty Images))
The race to finish fourth in the Premier League could effectively be down to two teams after a tasty batch of midweek fixtures has taken place.

Chelsea and Newcastle meet at Stamford Bridge, where the visitors have not won in the league since 1986.

Alan Pardew’s side must bounce back from their shock 4-0 drubbing at Wigan on Saturday and will know they cannot afford to lose to Chelsea with games against Manchester City (home) and Everton (away) to come.

Although still one point behind Newcastle in the table, Chelsea are absolutely flying and followed up their qualification for the Champions League final at Barcelona’s expense with a 6-1 thrashing of QPR.

However, Tottenham will still have plenty to say about who finishes fourth and hope to retain that position in the table when they travel to relegation-threatened Bolton.

A 2-0 victory over Blackburn at the weekend ended a run of three successive defeats for Spurs, whose manager Harry Redknapp will be keen to show the FA they were wrong by making Roy Hodgson their No 1 choice for the England manager’s job.

Bolton will exit the bottom three if they avoid defeat and a victory would be a huge boost in their quest to remain in the Premier League.

Liverpool face Chelsea in the FA Cup Final on Saturday and will aim to go into that game on a high by improving their poor Anfield record with victory over Fulham.

The Reds were on song when they won 3-0 at Norwich thanks to a Luis Suarez hat-trick and will be relying on the Uruguayan to fire them to another three points.

In the other midweek match, in-form Everton, who have scored four goals in each of their last three league games, visit Stoke with the aim of staying ahead of Liverpool in the battle for Merseyside supremacy.
