Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United were the big winners on 'Super Sunday' in the Premier League

A first-half goal ambush powered Manchester United to a 3-1 defeat of Chelsea in a breathless Premier League tussle that had just about everything. In fact, let's list what the match had: a Nani thunderbolt, a missed Wayne Rooney penalty, Fernando Torres' first goal in an aeon and then a glaring miss that will live with the Spanish international for some time.

At the end of it all is the simple fact that United are two points clear at the top of the Premier League tree and trade at 1.78 on betfair to win the title. Chelsea are 7.0 and Manchester City, held to a 2-2 draw at Fulham are 3.85.

Chris Smalling got us off to a quick start at Old Trafford with an eighth minute header. That advantage was doubled when Nani drove home a fierce shot from outside the area on 37 minutes and stretched to 3-0 thanks to a Rooney tap-in on the stroke of half-time. Torres pulled his team back into it immediately following the break, and he should have given the Blues a genuine chance at a draw but skewed his shot wide with the goal at his mercy with at least 10 minutes remaining.

Earlier in the day, City dropped points for the first time this season despite leading 2-0 thanks to a pair of Sergio Aguero goals at Craven Cottage. With that comfortable advantage punters were willing to back City at 1.03 but will have lost the cash thanks to goals from Bobby Zamora and Danny Murphy.

In the day's other 15:00 kick-off Sunderland pulled off an unexpectedly easy win over Stoke - crushing the in-form Potters 4-0.

Tottenham's Premier League rehabilitation continued with a 4-0 pounding of nine man Liverpool today.

Emmanuel Adebayor continued a fine start to his Spurs' career with a brace as White Hart Lane revelled in a comprehensive beating of their top-four rivals.

Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel were both booked twice as referee Mike Jones clamped down on some hefty challenges by the visitors. Adam left the field on the half hour mark with Skrtel off midway through the second half.

Tottenham never rose above 3.0 in the match odds as they were ahead within seven minutes - Luka Modric putting a sulky summer behind him with a sumptuous finish from 25 yards.

That was it for first-half goals but the floodgates opened after the break with Jermain Defoe doubling the lead and Adebayor adding two more, including one at the death to deny in-running backers of the 3-0 final score at 1.04.

Spurs are 2.76 to finish in the top four, Liverpool trade at 2.22.
