Wayne Rooney and Edin Dzeko both hit hat-tricks on Sunday and the pair now lead the top goalscorer betting

It wasn't just Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur that were cut down to size at the weekend - the odds on Wayne Rooney and Edin Dzeko to finish top Premier League goalscorer also took a hammering.

Rooney's hat-trick of set pieces against Arsenal and Dzeko's four strikes against Tottenham Hotspur have seen both players come in to 5.0 on betfair to finish top of the goalscoring charts come May.

They have both overtaken City's Sergio Aguero who also saw his odds shorted drastically from pre-season, following his brace against Swansea City and a strike against Spurs.

He can now be backed at 7.0.

This is Dzeko's first full season in England and, after looking like a very expensive fish out of water last term, he looks set to make a huge impression.

However, the only problem for Dzeko could be the sheer amount of quality at City's disposal.

While he's playing well at the moment, there is every chance he could go a couple of games without finding the net. As soon as that happens, you can bet on Roberto Mancini calling upon the likes or Carlos Tevez or Mario Balotelli to deputize.

Rooney will have no such problems at Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old is now one of the senior figures in a young side whose average age against Arsenal was just 23. Even last season he played 28 league games despite being out of form.

Rooney's previous best Premier League goals total was the 26 he bagged in the 2009/10 season, although he missed out on the top goalscorer award to Didier Drogba who hit 29.

The Ivorian is out at 65.0 to win his third gong this season.

The 26 goals Rooney scored in 2009/10 would have been enough to win the award six seasons out of the previous ten, with the highest winning total this decade being the 31 scored by Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008.

The lowest was Nicolas Anelka's 19 in 2009 - he's a massive 130.0 to repeat the trick this season.

Backing the experienced Rooney to hit the most goals at 5.0 looks well worth a punt.
