Manchester United produced a sensational second-half comeback to rescue a 3-3 draw at Chelsea.

Chelsea appeared to be on course for all three points when they took a three-goal lead on the 50-minute mark. The Blues, looking to strengthen their grip on fourth place, broke the deadlock on 36 minutes when Daniel  Sturridge’s shot struck the unfortunate Jonny Evans and was diverted beyond David de Gea.

They doubled their advantage a minute into the second half when mis-firing striker Fernando Torres sent in a cross, and fellow Spaniard Juan Mata got on the end of it to fire home a volley that gave de Gea no chance. Four minutes later it was 3-0 as David Luiz met a Mata free-kick to head home with the aid of deflection off Rio Ferdinand.

Chelsea handed United a glimmer of hope just before the hour mark when Patrice Evra was brought down by Daniel Sturridge, allowing Wayne Rooney to slot home a penalty. Referee Howard Webb again pointed to the spot 20 minutes from time after Danny Welbeck went to ground under a challenge from Branislav Ivanovic, and again Rooney made no mistake.

The comeback was completed five minutes from time when Javier Hernandez rose to head home a Ryan Giggs, and they then had the much-maligned de Gea to thank as he saved brilliantly from Mata and Gary Cahill to ensure United took a point (3-3 matched at 210.00 @ Betfair).

Despite the point United have lost ground on league leaders Manchester City, and they now now trade at 3.1 to win the Premier League).

In Sunday’s other Premier League game, Newcastle United (matched at 3.55) reclaimed fifth place in the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Aston Villa.

Demba Ba, back from the African Cup of Nations, handed the Magpies the lead on the half-hour mark, only for Robbie Keane to level matters on the stroke of half-time. However, Papiss Demba Cisse signalled his arrival in the North East, rifling home a half-volley on 71 minutes to mark his Toon debut with the winning goal (2-1 matched at 12.5).
