Poland 1-1 Greece - honours even in Euro 2012 opener

Poland couldn't hold on to an early lead against Greece and in the end the hosts were lucky not to lose the Euro 2012 opener after Giorgos Karagounis missed a second half penalty.

Poland and Greece produced a thrilling curtain raiser to Euro 2012 on Friday evening with a 1-1 draw barely telling the story of a highly eventful match in Warsaw.

The Poles, playing in front of their own fans at a major international tournament for the first time, started brightly and it was no surprise when Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring after 17 minutes. The Borussia Dortmund striker, who was 9/2 with Paddy Power to score the first goal in the game, headed home a cross from club mate Jakub Blaszczykowski to give the co-hosts the advantage.

Greece then had defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos sent off for a second yellow card on the stroke of half-time. Ferando Santos's side were 40/1 to win the match at half-time and even those odds will have had few backers.

However, Dimitris Salpingidis equalised just five minutes after the interval and Greece looked the stronger side, despite being a man down. They should have even won the match when, after 69 minutes, Arsenal goalkeeper Wojiech Szczesny pulled down Salpingidis and Greece were awarded a penalty. Szczesny was sent off but substitute goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton saved the spot kick.

Ultimately a draw was a fair result but it wasn't what Paddy Power will have been wanting as the Irish firm are now forced to refund all losing First/Last Goalscorer, Correct Score and Scorecast bets placed on the game via a mobile device.
