Southport first-team coach Pablo Asensio has revealed that he's applied for the vacant manager's post at League Two outfit Accrington Stanley.

The 39-year-old worked under former Accrington manager John Coleman at the Crown Ground in the 2008/09 season and is keen to take up the reins from caretaker manager Leam Richardson.

When asked if he was interested in the post, Asensio told the Lancashire Telegraph: "Yes, I have applied.

"I received an email from (chief executive) Rob Heys to say thank you for your application and that the club will be in contact shortly.

"I think it was a polite email.

"I worked as a coach with John Coleman and I enjoyed it there."
