Northern Ireland v Luxembourg betting tips - Lafferty can be relied upon on Tuesday night (kick off 19:30)

Northern Ireland can beat Luxembourg on Tuesday but don't expect Michael O'Neill's side to run up a cricket score against the 'minnows'.

Northern Ireland began their World Cup 2014 campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Russia in Moscow and it was somewhat fortuitous that they weren't beaten by more in a match in which Michael O'Neill's side were comprehensively outclassed.

There isn't any real shame in being beaten by one of Europe's strongest sides but one thing that will have disappointed the manager was the number of basic mistakes made by his players. Short passes were misplaced, tackles were mistimed and it was only at set-pieces that Northern Ireland ever looked remotely dangerous. Improvements will be needed, and expected, against Luxembourg on Tuesday.

It is 10/21 at Bwin that Northern Ireland bounce back with a win against Luxembourg at Windsor Park and there are few people that would argue with those odds, given the visitors' record of twelve defeats in their last thirteen international matches. They have not claimed an away win in the last five years and it would be a huge embarrassment if Luc Holtz's side won in Belfast, at odds of 8/1 with Paddy Power.

Nonetheless, they won't make life easy for their hosts. Portugal were stunned when the minnows took the lead on Friday and it needed a good goal from Helder Postiga to save their blushes and claim a 2-1 win, which is not a bad result at all for Luxembourg. If Northern Ireland go into Tuesday's game with anything akin to overconfidence then they could easily get stung. It is for that reason that backing the home side to cover a one goal handicap, at 11/8 with Sky Bet, isn't advised. It should be a win for the Green Army but it may be more difficult than some anticipate.

What is a good bet, however, is that Kyle Laffety scores at Windsor Park. The former Rangers striker was his side's only attacking outlet on Friday evening and he will once again be asked to play as a the central striker against Luxembourg. Lafferty is a divisive character but his record of 9 goals in 32 international matches is actually very good, considering how few opportunities he is presented with. In the last three qualifying campaigns he has scored against Faroe Islands, San Marino and Liechtenstein. Luxembourg can be put in that bracket and even money at Boylesports that the 23-year-old finds the net on Tuesday looks to be the best bet on a potentially trappy game.

Recommendation

Anytime Goalscorer - Kyle Lafferty (Evens, Boylesports)
