Lyon will be desperate to finally get their hands on French football’s biggest prize after coming up short in recent years, finishing third in 2010/11, but coach Remi Garde has resisted any temptation he may have had to make changes to his squad by being virtually anonymous in the transfer market during the summer months.

However, there is no doubting the pedigree of the squad Garde has at his disposal and it is no surprise to see them among the bookmakers’ favourites to life the title next May, with odds of 5/2 on offer. The bookmakers are also in no doubt that Lyon will kick off their title challenge with a win over Nice, with Les Gones evens to pick up three points at Stade de Gerland. In the first goalscorer market Lisandro Lopez is 9/2, while team-mates Bafetimbi Gomis 5/1 and Jimmy Briand 11/2. In the anytime goalscorer stakes they are 7/5, 8/5 and 7/4 respectively.

Nice, meanwhile, will have their sights on mid-table respectability after finishing just one place and two points above the relegation zone last season. Coach Eric Roy has responded to that by bringing in four new faces during the summer transfer window, with Fabian Monzon joining from Boca Juniors, Didier Digard making the move from Middlesbrough, Camel Meriem signing from Arles-Avignon and Kevin Gomis arriving from Naval.

Nice are 3/1 to register an upset victory over the title challengers on day one of the French season, while Roy’s side are 11/5 to hold Lyon to a draw. Striker Mickael Pote is 17/2 to be the opening goalscorer of this game and 11/4 to find the net anytime.
