Steve Bruce has been sacked as manager of Sunderland after a poor start to the season by the Black Cats. The most surprising fact is that he's actually the first Premier League manager to be sacked with a third of the season already gone.

Sunderland were already in a somewhat precarious position prior to last weekend's fixtures but a shock defeat at home to Wigan, courtesy of a late Franco Di Santo goal was seen as the final nail in the coffin for Bruce, who had moved to the north East two and a half years ago from none other than...Wigan.

The former Manchester United skipper leaves the club languishing in 16th place with 11 points from 13 matches.

Some of the criticism aimed at Bruce was that the poor results were on the back of a summer spending spree that saw him buy big-name players on big wages including former Manchester United duo Wes Brown and John O'Shea, ex-Birmingham City star Seb Larsson and on-loan Danish international Niklas Bendtner.

As former Stadium Of Light legend Kevin Phillips said this evening: "At the end of the day the players need to look at themselves. Steve has brought in a lot of players for a lot of money and they haven't responded for him."

And in Bruce's defence, over the last half-year he was forced to offload his two best goalscorers in Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan.

Chairman Ellis Short explained his decision by saying: "Sadly results this season have simply not been good enough and I feel the time is right to make a change."

That may well be the case but the Betfair market thinks Sunderland are far from being amongst the most likely sides to go down and are actually just eighth favourites for the drop at 6.8.

On the subject of favourites, former Leicester, Celtic and Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill is the early favourite to succeed Bruce. Despite no comments from the Irishman on the matter he has already traded as low as 1.55 on the market though he's now available at a far more reasonable price of 2.4.

Mark Hughes at 3.4 is the only other candidate whose odds are in single figures.
