The former Chelsea manager – who enjoyed amazing success with Porto before his ill-fated spell in west London – has been cut to 11/4 to become their next permanent boss.

He is still behind Wigan manager Roberto Martinez in the betting, with the Spaniard in at 7/4 to take over at Anfield.

However, with owners John W Henry and Tom Werner still reeling from the criticism they’ve received over the handling of Kenny Dalglish’s exit, going after a more proven manager would surely be the sensible move.

Villas-Boas may not have had the best of times at Chelsea but when he left they were still in the Champions League and FA Cup – two trophies they eventually went on to win (albeit with Roberto Di Matteo making big changes to the way they played).

Villas-Boas had a brilliant record at Porto, winning the Portuguese title and the Europa League, and made some very decent signings while at Chelsea, including midfield playmaker Juan Mata.

He looks the most impressive of the front-runners, with Liverpool fans hardly brimming with excitement at the possibility of having Martinez take charge.

He will have learnt from his experiences at Chelsea and it’s fair to say there aren’t quite as many egos at Anfield as Stamford Bridge.

According to the Sunday Express, sources close to Villas-Boas claim he is determined to prove himself in England and that can only be a good thing for Liverpool.

Backing him to be the next Reds boss at 11/4 looks a punt well worth taking on.
