Next Chelsea FC manager odds - Di Matteo chance given "enormous" boost

Roberto Di Matteo's chances of becoming next permanent Chelsea manager were given an "enormous boost" when they won the Champions League, the club say (credit: Getty Images)
Chelsea have admitted winning the Champions League has boosted Roberto Di Matteo's chances of landing their manager's job “enormously”.

After taking over from sacked Andre Villas-Boas in an interim role in March, the Italian has led the blues to the FA Cup and then Champions League glory with a penalty shootout victory over Bayern Munich.

He is now a best-priced 8/13 with Bet365 to claim the job on a permanent basis.

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay says no discussions have yet taken place with owner Roman Abramovich about a new manager.

However, if they had, Gourlay admits: “It certainly would have made the discussions a bit different. The fact he has the Champions League on his CV helps him enormously.

“I know there has been speculation in the press and media about conversations with 'X, Y, Z'. That hasn’t been the case.

“We will sit down as a board of directors with our owner as quickly as we can and take our decision from there. We are going through that process now and then we'll sit down...it's only been a couple of days (since the season ended).”

Gourlay said a permanent manager could be in place in less than a fortnight.

“(A new manager could be appointed) any time over the next couple of weeks and certainly by the time we go on tour,” he added.

“The players report back on July 4 or 5 and in an ideal world you want the coach in position by then.”

Former England manager Fabio Capello is the 3/1 second favourite for the Stamford Bridge role, with Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp 10/1 and Pep Guardiola 12/1.
