Newcastle United have stepped up their interest in FC Twente pair Luuk de Jong and Douglas, according to Sky Sports.

Toon manager Alan Pardew is eager to strengthen his squad following a successful 2011/12 campaign that saw them finish fifth after challenging for a top four finish, and the former Southampton boss has reportedly made de Jong and Douglas his number one targets.

De Jong has netted 39 goals in 76 appearances for FC Twente, but his future appears to be away from De Grolsch Veste after the 21-year-old, capped seven times by the Holland national team, failed to report for pre-season training.

The Magpies are believed to have sent managing director Derek Lambias to Holland to discuss a deal, with the North East club ready to increase their initial £8m bid for striker de Jong

Lambias is reportedly ready to make £10m offer for the 21-year-old, in the hope that FC Twente will give them the green light, while also making a play for Brazilian-born defender Douglas.

Newcastle United will have to act fast though, with German Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach also in the hunt to sign de Jong before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the summer.

Betfred are currently offering odds of 16/1 on Newcastle United bettering their 2011/12 season by finishing in the top four at the end of the 2012/13 Premier League campaign.
