Manchester United haven't been particularly impressive of late and Wednesday's Carling Cup clash with Crystal Palace is an excellent opportunity for the fringe players to stake a claim for a first team place.

Wayne Rooney has not scored a Premier League goal since September and Manchester United have failed to score more than once in their last six league matches, a run that goes back to October 1st. This is very unlike the champions and Sir Alex Ferguson will be keen for his side to arrest this poor form in front of goal, particularly with some key matches coming up over Christmas.

Part of the reason for United's poor scoring record is that they have become more defensive since the 6-1 hammering from Manchester City in October. That result was a huge psychological blow and made Ferguson question the wisdom of playing a 'gung ho' attacking style of football.

It is also, however, simply a case of a lack of invention from some players. Nani and Rooney have been disappointing in recent weeks and Tom Cleverley's absence means that there is a lack of creativity in the centre of the park. Michael Carrick is little more than a journeyman and Darren Fletcher is not a player that will dictate the tempo of a match.

There is clearly an opportunity then for someone to come in and stake a claim for a place in the Manchester United side and Ferguson will be hoping that happens on Wednesday evening, when Crystal Palace visit Old Trafford in the Carling Cup quarter finals.

Players like Paul Pogba, Zeki Fryers, Ravel Morrison, Mame Biram Diouf and Federico Macheda are expected to start for the hosts, while Dimitar Berbatov will be given a rare first team opportunity. The Bulgarian is 7/2 at totesport to open the scoring against Palace and he will be keen to impress. It is no longer about winning a place in the Manchester United side for Berbatov but instead he will want to impress visiting scouts and win a move away from Old Trafford in January.

It is 1/4 at bet365 that Manchester United beat Crystal Palace on Wednesday and that appears to be a given. The Championship side have neither won a game nor scored a goal in their last five league matches and the idea of them suddenly finding form in the Theatre of Dreams is fairly unrealistic - hence odds of 12/1 at Sky Bet.

They will, however, be keen not to end up embarrassed by the hosts and will adopt a defensive strategy. That will further reduce their chance of scoring and 11/10 at Coral that Manchester United win to nil looks an incredible price. Not only are Palace struggling to score this season but they have failed to find the net in five of their last six trips to Old Trafford.

Recommendation

Win to Nil - Manchester United (11/10, Coral)
