Manchester United counting on Mark Hughes to thwart Manchester City

Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping, for Manchester United’s sake, that title rivals City’s sacking of Mark Hughes in December 2009 comes back to haunt them on Premier League D-day.

Manchester City, whom Ferguson described as the “noisy neighbours”, need only to beat the relegation-threatened QPR side now managed by Hughes to wrest the title from United’s grasp.

But the United manager thinks the “unethical” way Hughes was dispensed with in favour of Roberto Mancini will give an extra edge to the Etihad Stadium clash.

“QPR need a point and are fighting for survival,” said Ferguson, whose team maintained an outside chance of retaining the crown with a 2-0 home win over Swansea after City had triumphed by the same scoreline at Newcastle.

“The whole future of the club could be resting on the game and I only wish ‘Sparky’ was playing!

“But Mark knows his job all right. He was sacked by City in a very unethical way and he’ll remember that.”

If City fail to wrap up the title now, it would be compared to the collapse of the Queen Mother’s racehorse Devon Loch when in sight of Grand National victory.

“There could be a Devon Loch, you never know,” added Ferguson. “Stranger things have happened in this game of football.

“City are red-hot favourites but we have won the title on the last day three times and we don’t mind doing it again.”

At the end of his club’s final home match of the season, Ferguson gave a short speech to supporters in which he encouraged them to be prepared for “the biggest celebration of their lives” if United could somehow cling on to the championship.

But he had earlier admitted in a TV interview that City “probably have two hands on the trophy” - and that seems much the more realistic of the two scenarios.
