Manchester United could replace FC Basel in the competition after a row between FIFA and the Swiss FA

Manchester United have been knocked out of the Champions League, although an ongoing row between FIFA and the Swiss FA could see the Red Devils back in the competition.

William Hill offer 16/1 about the English champions getting a reprieve, with the Swiss FA continuing to fight against FC Sion’s removal from the Europa League which saw Celtic come back into the competition.

A statement from FIFA read: "The executive decided to give a final deadline of January 13 2012 to the Swiss FA to enforce the registration ban imposed on Sion by the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber and confirmed by the Swiss Federal Court and to sanction the attitude of the club repeatedly trying to circumvent this decision in a legally abusive manner.

"As a consequence, all matches in which the relevant players participated shall be declared forfeit or three points shall be deducted respectively. Should this deadline not be respected, the Swiss FA will be automatically suspended from January 14 2012 onwards."

Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe told Bettingpro: "FIFA are trying to kill off FC Sion's long-running legal case against them and has threatened to ban all Swiss teams from international competition if it isn't resolved by January - which could just open the door for United, who finished behind FC Basel, to be reinstated."
