Manchester City were knocked out of the FA Cup by local rivals Manchester United on Sunday but Roberto Mancini's players won't be feeling too downbeat about the defeat. The Citizens played with ten men for 80 minutes and came back from 3-0 down to make the game 3-2 and the impression was that if the game had last another ten minutes then City would have equalised.

That will have been a huge psychological boost for the players and they will go into Wednesday's Carling Cup semi final with Liverpool determined to prove that deserve a place at Wembley. Playing the Reds, who City beat 3-0 last week, is also an advantage and it would be a surprise if there is any result other than a home win in the first leg.

It is, therefore, strange to see Manchester City as big as even money at bet365 to beat Kenny Dalglish's side this week. Liverpool will be without the suspended Luis Suarez and the striker is big miss. Steven Gerrard's return is big boost but the Reds' captain is short of match fitness and will find life tough against Nigel De Jong and James Milner in central midfield.

It is 3/1 that Liverpool at the Etihad but Dalglish will go into the game with the intention of simply avoiding defeat and will be more than happy to take a draw (23/10) back to Anfield. This could be a dangerous tactic as Sergio Aguero, who is 9/2 to open the scoring, and David Silva (15/2) have shown this season that they are virtually impossible to contain and if they are given any space they will punish their opponents. Mario Balotelli (11/2) is also expected to return on Wednesday and his mercurial brilliance will only boost City's chances of scoring.

Mancini will want a big win from his players and odds of 13/2 that Manchester City win by two or more goals is simply far too big. It took just ten minutes for the Citizens to score against Liverpool last week and if they get an early goal on Wednesday then it could easily be another big win and a repeat of the 3-0 win from eight days ago could be worth a punt at a generous price of 16/1.
