Manchester City v Bayern Munich result – City dumped out despite win

Manchester City produced some final-night heroics with a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich, but it was not enough to put them in the last-16 of the Champions League.

City went into the match knowing they had to get the better of Bayern and hope that Villarreal held Napoli, and they were handed a major boost when Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes left a number of his star men out of his starting XI.

The Premier League leaders thought they had gone in front after 15 minutes when David Silva’s free-kick found the back of the net, but their joy was short-lived as the referee wiped out the ‘goal’ for a four on Bayern goalkeeper Jorg Butt.

City would not be denied the opening goal though, and it came in 37 minutes when Edin Dzeko teed up David Silva, and the Spain international produced a sensational volley that gave Butt no chance.

A goal-line clearance from former defender Jerome Boateng stopped Sergio Aguero doubling City’s advantage, and Silva then brought a fine save out of Butt as the hosts looked to strengthen their lead.

City did double their advantage when Dzeko played in Yaya Toure to score, but their dreams of a place in the knockout stage were extinguished when the news broke that Napoli had netted two second-half goals to beat Villarreal.
