The City manager had played down the blues’ chances of snatching the title from arch-rivals Manchester United throughout the run-in, but now concedes they are only 90 minutes of football away from becoming champions.

City won 2-0 away to Newcastle and need only to take three points at home to relegation-threatened QPR to secure their first league championship since 1968.

Asked if he now believed City are the favourites, Mancini replied: “Maybe yes, because it depends on us.

“If we beat QPR we will be the champions. But at this moment we can’t think about this. We need to prepare very well for the next game, only this.

“I am excited because we are on the top, but it’s not enough. One week more and if we play like we did at Newcastle we have a lot of chance to win.”

Yaya Toure was City’s hero at the Sport Direct Arena, scoring both goals in the second half, and he also refused to admit the title race was as good as over.

“It’s not finished,” he said. “We have one game left and we have to be careful as QPR are fighting to stay in the Premier League. We have to continue to work hard and believe.

“The manager told me to deliver because it was an important game. We need to keep improving but it was a brilliant result for us.”
