Liverpool are in a commanding position in their Carling Cup semi final tie with Liverpool and they should be able to do enough on Wednesday to reach the final of the competition.

I have to admit that I was surprised to see Manchester City lose to Liverpool a fortnight ago, particularly as the Citizens had beaten the Reds 3-0 just a week before. However, there was no luck or fortune about Liverpool's 1-0 win at the Etihad Stadium, even although the only goal of the game came via a penalty kick.

Kenny Dalglish simply got his tactics right against a City side that struggled to cope without Vincent Kompany, Kolo Toure and Yaya Toure. The same three players will also be missing for the Carling Cup semi final second leg on Wednesday and that means that Manchester City will once again have problems in defence. Stefan Savic is not a bad player but the 21-year-old is very raw and, unfortunately, seems to have every one of his mistakes punished by a goal. That was once again the case against Spurs on Sunday and the Montengran must be short on confidence.

Savic will be up against Craig Bellamy, who is a handful for even the best defenders in the world, and Andy Carroll, who isn't, but it is the midfield runs of Steven Gerrard and Maxi Rodriguez which could decide Wednesday's game. The former scored the only goal of the game in the first leg a fortnight ago and he is surely going to be a key player for Liverpool over the second half of the season. It is 7/1 that Gerrard opens the scoring and that could be a good price on a player that may be asked to play as a second striker on Wednesday.

Manchester City put in a huge effort to beat Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and it is likely that Roberto Mancini will have prioritised that Premier League win over Wednesday's Carling Cup tie. He may, therefore, give Sergio Aguero and David Silva an evening off, which could lead to a lack of invention in the away attack. Mario Balotelli will play but the Italian, who is 6/1 to open the scoring, is often a disappointment in evening matches under floodlights and he lasted just half an hour of the first leg before being substituted.

City need to win to qualify for the final of the Carling Cup and the pressure of that may be too much for the visitors at Anfield. It is 17/10 that they beat Liverpool but one would fancy the Reds can hang onto their one goal lead and claim at least a draw (9/4). Backing Liverpool on the 'draw no bet' option at 5/6 or simply 'to qualify' at 2/5 is probably the best way to secure profits.

Recommendation

Draw No Bet - Liverpool (5/6, bet365)
